Parents and Guardians

Picture
Normally, parents would love it if their children completely stay away from cyberbullying. However, this is a very big issue on social media and there is big chance that they are going to experience cyberbullying. While there are many things that parents can try to prevent cyberbullying or help their child who is going through cyberbullying, there is no guarantee that it will work.

One of the most important techniques that parents must use is keeping and maintain an open and honest discussion between them and the child. Parents must listen to everything the child the has to say. Listening helps the child talk and parents can get beneath the surface chatter. If parents let the child lead the conversation, it shows the child that he or she is getting the attention or the security that is required to bottom down the important issues. During discussion parents shouldn’t ask yes and no question, rather they should ask opened question that are directed towards the child so the child will open up. It is important that parents educate their children about internet safety. Parents should talk warns them about how they should maintain their privacy on the internet, stay away from online predators trying to hacking into systems, staying away from pornographic sites, etc. Parents should keep tabs on close online friends of their children. They should let their children know so their child doesn’t feel like their privacy is being invaded. Parents should take the initiative to educate their children about cyberbullying. The children should be aware that they should not engage or retaliate to any comments on social media. Ignoring the bully is key in these situations. Parents should help the child build self-confidence. Children’s social media usage should be regulated and monitored by their parents. Parents should always look for signs of cyberbullying like their child spending lesser/ more time on social media, their child is facing anxiety and depression or is trying to hide something from parents.

Parents should implement these techniques from a very young age, so their child steers clear of cyberbullying and their child is mental healthy.
